When one of the greatest lyricists celebrates the 20th anniversary of his classic album,  it has to be done right.

Just a day after releasing Illmatic XX, the special edition reissue of his landmark debut album, Nas continued his 20th Anniversary celebration by premiering the Time Is Illmatic documentary at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. Directed by One9 and written by Erik Parker, the feature-length film “delves into the making of Illmatic; the social conditions that created it; and the music legacy passed down from Nas’ Mississippi-born father and celebrated jazz musician, Olu Dara.”

Following the screening, Nas took the stage, bottle of Henny in hand, to perform his Illmatic classics, including “N.Y. State of Mind,” “The World Is Yours” and “Halftime.” In between songs, Nas shared anecdotes and brought out some legendary guests: Pete Rock, Large Professor, DJ Premier, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous and Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro, who presented the film.
