Running rooms in Sydney

What matters when you bill visiting specialists from Sydney rooms.

Your month-end, in NSW terms

Revenue NSW’s ruling explains how it applies the contractor provisions to medical centres. It is effective from 1 July 2018, so the way past months were arranged and billed can matter. SuiteBook keeps every arrangement dated and every finalised month locked.

Show what was charged, and why

Each tax invoice lists the sessions, the rooms and the fees under the arrangement that applied on the day. Your adviser can trace any line back to the dated arrangement behind it.

Procedure rooms on their own rates

If your Sydney suite has a procedure room, it can carry its own rate in each specialist’s arrangement and appear as its own line on the monthly invoice.

Time zone: AEST / AEDT. New South Wales uses daylight saving, so Sydney sessions run on AEDT from October to April.

Payroll tax and medical centres in New South Wales

Revenue NSW publishes guidance on how payroll tax may apply to payments made under arrangements between medical centres and practitioners. SuiteBook is a billing tool. It does not tell you whether payroll tax applies to your arrangements, and using it does not make your suite compliant.

  • Revenue NSW publishes its own ruling on relevant contracts and medical centres.
  • Revenue NSW also publishes guidance on how payroll tax applies to GP contractors. Read it with your adviser to see what applies to specialist arrangements.
  • Whether payroll tax applies depends on your facts. SuiteBook does not decide that.
  • Get your own legal, tax and accounting advice about how your arrangements are structured.

Sydney questions

Does SuiteBook decide whether payroll tax applies to my NSW suite?

No. It records and bills the arrangements you have made. Read Revenue NSW ruling PTA 041 and Revenue NSW’s other guidance with your adviser.

Does SuiteBook list Sydney consulting rooms for rent?

No. SuiteBook is software for the operator of the rooms. It is not a listing site and does not take bookings from the public.

Can specialists see their own invoices?

Yes. The specialist portal shows each specialist their own sessions, tax invoices and statement, and nobody else’s.
